Summer is almost here and it doesn't matter whether you have dark or light skin. Either way, we are all prone to getting our skin burned under the sun if we don't take proper precautions.

Here's 5 ways to avoid getting deep-fried in the sun:

1. Your clothing matters

People can get sunburned even by wearing t-shirts. For extra sensitive skin, put on sunscreen lotion under your clothes. A tightly woven fabric such as denim allows less light penetration and so it offers more protection than linen.

2. Sunscreens should have UVA and UVB protection

UVB rays cause sunburns while UVA rays age the skin, thus causing wrinkles and tans. Both can be harsh on anyone's skin and increases the risk of skin cancer. Look for these active ingredients in your sunscreen lotion: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

3. A high SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is hype

A higher the SPF value is supposed to provide better sun protection against UVB light. However, research says that the protective factors plateau from SPF 50. So you don't need anything higher than SPF 50, besides they are just more expensive.

4. Sunscreen sprays are not as effective

While sunscreen sprays are easy to apply, they are less effective. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide doesn't come in spray form and most of the sprays protect mainly against UVB rays, not UVA.

5. Darker skin tone isn't a free pass

People with darker skin complexion may have natural skin pigmentation that protect them from the sun's harmful rays but that doesn't mean they are totally immune against sunburns and skin cancers.

So…have fun this summer but don't forget to put on some sunscreen lotion before you go out in the sun!
